Recording Additional Tree Information

The following is a list of field critera collected for all tree registrations.  Some fields are self explanatory and some are automatically completed.  Guidance notes are provided for others.  These field criteria may be amended from time to time. It is important to collect complete and thorough data of the tree whilst in the field.

Location Data
1) Location- Region.  Drop down of NZ regional list
2) Location - City or Township
3) Location - Suburb
4) Location Name - i.e Albert Park, Oak Cottage, Puhinui Scenic Reserve
5) Location- Street Address.  Record the nearest Street or Road if none i.e. for a park or forest
6) Location - Description.  Describe access to the tree from nearest reference point
7) Location - Public Accessibility.  Private, Urban, Rural, DOC, Local Council reserve
8) Name of local authority.  Drop down of NZ Local Authority List.
9) GPS.  A google map feature on the website will allow you to locate your tree when you click the geocode button.

Tree Category – Choose One
10) Tree Category - Single specimen  Auto selected at present.
11) Tree Category - Stand  (A group of trees of the same species) Unavailable at present
12) Tree Category - Group  (A group of trees of mixed species) Unavailable at present

Single Tree Data
13) Botanical Name - select from the dropdown list
14) Common Name.  This is automatically filled on the data base with the current accepted common names.
15) Given Name  (If the tree has some historical name or has been given a local name i.e. Barrington Gum, Tane  Mahuta.  Field could also be left blank.)
16) Height (metres)
17) Height Measurement Methodology.  Clinometer, Laser, climb & tape drop, Arthur Treeby method, Abney level, Stick method, or Estimated.
18) Height Comments.  i.e. Average of shots taken with clinometer recorded.  Difficult to sight top of tree etc.
19) Girth measurement (cm's)
20) Height of girth measurement.  i.e. 1.4 metres or other height taken from. 
21) Girth Comments.  i.e. Measurement was taken at 500mm because of large burl above. Record other measurements such as size of buttress
22) Diameter.  Auto calculated from girth measurements
23) Crown Spread A (m)
24) Crown Spread B (m)
25) Average Crown Spread (m).  Auto calculated from 2 measurements above.
26) Date planted if known.  Record month and year here if known from a reliable source
27) Approximate date of planting.  Estimated age if exact date is not known i.e. Circa 1864
28) Age.  Auto calculated from the fields above. 
29) Physical Description of tree. What state of health is the tree in?
30) Tree Form Type (Single Trunk or Multiple trunk. Fused stems, Coppice, Pollard or other )
31) Number of Trunks. Record how many stems are contained within your girth measurement
32) Tree Form Comments. Describe the tree i.e. typical open grown tree, forest grown, broken/multiple tops, bifurcated stems, branches at 3m etc.

Miscellaneous Information
33) Recorded/measured by - (List names in last name, first initial format of those that assisted in measuring the tree)
34) Date of field measurement
35) Tree age. This is automatically calculated from year of planting or estimated age.
36) STEM Score.  Not a required field but a STEM field manual must be used.
37) Champion Tree score. Points are automatically calculated for all single stemmed individual trees only.
38) Local Protection Status. Yes/No. Include any specific details in notes.
39) Is a NZNTT Plaque attached? Yes/No. Describe what type of plaque and the condition of in notes.
40) Ownership Contact Information. This is not publicly viewable. Private trees must have landowner consent to list the trees. No consent is required for Public trees.
41) Notes - miscellaneous or optional information if applicable.  This may include expanded notes about tree health, historical notes, location comments, setting, age estimates, age dates, private covenants local protection reference number and whatever else might be relevant.
